Human Immunodeficiency Virus
Stage 0: Viral transmission
Stage 1: Acute infection aka primary HIV aka acute seroconversion syndrome
- Flu-like illness lasting a couple of weeks mimicking EBV
- Viral load peaks at seroconversion, most infective period
Stage 2: Clinical latency (HIV inactivity or dormancy) (~10y wihtout treatment)
- Asymptomatic, neglecting Persistent generalised lymphadenopathy
- Stable viral load, progressive CD4 count decline
- viral load begins to increase, CD4 count continues to drop
- infections that aren't AIDS defining
- AIDS characterised by a CD4 cell count <200 cells/microL or the presence of any AIDS-defining condition
- Advanced HIV infection = CD4 cell count <50 cells/microL
ART prevents progression and reduces transmission
