Measles
Exanthems
At risk = unvaccinated (vaccine at 12 and 18mo), recent travel
Infectious from the day before the prodrome to 4d after start of rash.
Via coughing and sneezing
Prodrome: 2-4 days fever, cough, coryza, and conjunctivitis.
A maculo-papular rash then typically begins on the face and neck then generalised, ongoing fever
(Same if in OPD but move to ED if feasible)
Negative pressure isolation with surgical mask
Call CRMO (they will call infection control nurse (#47140) + ID)
and PH (28333, 1300 066 055) immediately, Bed manager,
Record all pt in ED during visit and for 30mins post discharge for potential contact tracing
PPE: N95, goggles, gown and gloves
Test – mark urgent, send each as available, notify virology (29103) and serology (29152) or virologist (ah)
PCR done weekly, other same day in hours
Complications:
Encephalitis
Pneumonia
Diarrhoea, ear infections

- Blood – measles IgM+G
- Viral Swab – Nose and throat/NPA Measles antigen (immunofluorescence) and PCR
- First pass urine – Measles antigen (immunofluorescence) and PCR
PCR done weekly, other same day in hours

Diarrhoea, ear infections
