Urine Microscopy and Culture
Microscopy
- >40 x 106/L WC > pyuria (RCPA) (AAP uses 25-50 as the cut off depending on method)
- >10 x 106/L RC > haematuria (dysmorphic = glomerular, eumorphic = bleed below glomerulus)
- >10 x 106/L squamous epithelial cells > contamination
Casts
- Red cell casts: Glomerulonephritis
- White cell/mixed casts: any nephritis
- Granular / hyaline (clear, made of tubular mucoprotein) casts: dehydration
Possible diagnoses:
- UTI (Bacteriuria with pyuria)
- Sterile pyuria
- Asymptomatic bacteriuria
