- moves with swallowing and protrusion of tongue
- from foramen caecum (remanent of 2nd arch that becomes thyroid cells) between anterior tongue (1st arch) and posterior tongue (3rd arch), ie is the path of thyroid cell decent.
- can be sinus, fistula or cyst
Goitre
- Slow onset
Thyroid adenoma
- Rare in children
- asymetrical
- Usually euthyroid but may be hyperthyroid
Doesn't move vertically with swallowing
Lymphadenopathy
- in acute infection usually tender
- Bacterial (Cat scratch, Atypical mycobacteria)
- Viral
- Usually dental abscess
- Pushes up and back obstructing airway/swallowing
- painful
